Creating KML files with Google My Maps
If you want to draw multiple routes or streets and export them as a KML file for use in Route Validator as Forbidden Roads, the best way is to use Google My Maps.
1. Create a new custom map
- Go to Google My Maps.
- Sign in with your Google account.
- Click "Create a New Map".
2. Add routes or streets
You have two practical options to add data to your map:
A) Draw lines manually
Use the "Draw a line" tool (polyline icon):
- Select Add driving/walking/biking route to snap to roads.
- Click your starting point, then click each turn/intersection to define the route.
- Double-click or hit Finish when done.
- You can repeat this for each separate route you want to add.
B) Import existing GPS data
If you already have tracks (GPX/CSV/KML) from other tools, use the Import button on a layer to upload them.
3. Organize your map
- Put each route in its own layer for better organization.
- Rename layers and add markers for key points if necessary.
4. Export as KML
When your map is ready:
- Click the three dots next to the map title (upper left).
- Choose Export to KML/KMZ.
- Select the entire map or a specific layer.
- Make sure to check "Export as KML instead of KMZ" if you want a raw KML file (though Route Validator supports both).
- Click Download.
This gives you a file you can then load into Route Validator using the "Load KML" button.
